WORKING AS A CONSTRUCTION STEAMFITTER

Construction Steamfitters lay out, assemble, fabricate, troubleshoot, maintain, and repair piping systems that carry water, steam, chemicals, compressed air, liquids, gases, or fuel used in energy production, heating, cooling, food & beverage, manufacturing, lubricating and a wide variety of other various processes.
Installation of process piping systems includes basic knowledge as follows:
  • Digital and blueprint reading, drawings, specifications, detailed isometric sketches, pipe and equipment fabrication, and installation layout.
  • Rigging, setting, supporting, and piping of related equipment, valves, fittings, etc.
  • Measure, cut, bend, prepare and join all types of pipes, including threading, welding, brazing, soldering, cementing, fusion, and mechanical joining.
  • Preparation of the construction site for equipment installation and piping, including walls, floors, ceilings, rooftops, shafts, etc.
  • Pressure-test all systems to detect leaks prior to startup.
  • Works independently while using proper piping practices in the industry and confirms the appropriate function of installed/repaired piping systems and related equipment.
There are two (2) available programs to become a Construction Steamfitter for Steamfitters Local 601. However, each independent program is based on your level of experience in the industry, yet achieve the same results.

Apprenticeship Training Program

This is a 5-year basic entry program designed for individuals with minimal to no prior background. Apprentices receive training both on the job and from a proprietary curriculum of classroom instruction. Upon completion of this program, apprentices become successful Journey-Level Steamfitters in the industry.

Accelerated Welding Program

This is an 18-week program designed for individuals with an extensive welding background. Steamfitter Trainees combine their prior welding abilities with a variety of welding processes to acquire industry-demanded certifications then follow up with a proprietary curriculum in the classroom. Upon completion of this program, Trainees become successful Journey-Level Steamfitters in the industry.
