HVAC-R/SERVICE – STEAMFITTER APPRENTICESHIP
The HVAC-Refrigeration/Service Steamfitter apprenticeship is a 5-year time-based training program where an apprentice earns while they learn, Apprentices learn the trade through three structured training opportunities:
- Paid Related Instruction ( Theory & Fundamentals)
- Unpaid Related Instruction ( Techniques & Certifications)
- On-the-Job Training (Applied Education)
Upon completion of the Steamfitters Local 601 Apprenticeship Program, Journey-level members are awarded 45 college credits and a rewarding career with no college debt.
How to Become a Steamfitter
Application process:
- APPLY – Attend a Trade Orientation and fill out an application. Registration is not required to attend!
- All Trade Orientations are hosted at the respective training centers at 4pm
- Milwaukee – 4th Tuesday of each month:
- 2025 – January 28th, February 25th, March 25th
- Location: 3300 S. 103rd Street Milwaukee, WI.
- Madison – 4th Wednesday of each month;
- 2025 – January 22nd, February 26th, March 26th
- Location: 6310 Town Center Drive Madison, WI.
- Milwaukee – 4th Tuesday of each month:
- SUBMIT – High School transcripts
- PASS – Entry assessments
- All testing is hosted at the respective WRTP/Big Step Centers
- Test sessions are by appointment only
- RECEIVE – Letter of Introduction and approved contractor contact list
- FIND – An approved contractor to sponsor your apprenticeship

Who Can Apply?
Minimum Requirements:
- 18 years of age
- High School Transcript or equivalent
- Valid Driver’s License

Steamfitters Local 601 funds and works with WRTP/Big Step to identify and help individuals receive the assistance needed to get into the Apprenticeship Program.Besides just hosting the entry assessments, WRTP/Big Step can help with the following:- High School Diploma or equivalent transcripts
- Attain a WI Driver’s License
- Tutoring for the entry assessments
